Lead is the most prevalent material used for sinkers in fishing gears in India. While lead possesses desirable characteristics for this application, it is globally recognized as a toxic substance detrimental to humans and wildlife. The leached lead acts as a neurotoxin, slowly accumulating in living tissues and causing various health problems. Considering the sustainability of marine ecosystems and human health concerns, the ICAR-CIFT has developed stainless steel sinkers as an alternative for lead sinkers. Stainless steel is non-corrosive and does not leach into the marine environment. Additionally, due to its resistance to wear and tear, stainless steel sinkers can maintain their weight for several years.
