
The Zonal Technology Management & Agribusiness Incubation (ZTM-ABI) Centre at ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT), Kochi, organised a workshop on 27th April 2026, to mark World Intellectual Property Day 2026, highlighting the role of intellectual property (IP) in driving innovation and creativity.
The programme brought together over 70 participants, including scientists, technical and administrative staff, research scholars, and students from the institute’s headquarters and its research centres. The workshop aimed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting intellectual assets and to demonstrate how IP frameworks can empower researchers, entrepreneurs, and startups, particularly in the fisheries and allied sectors.
The workshop featured expert sessions by distinguished professionals in the field of intellectual property. Shri R.S. Praveen Raj, Scientist ‘F’, CSIR-NIIST, Thiruvananthapuram, elaborated on strategies for converting research outcomes into viable commercial ventures, highlighting both direct and indirect revenue streams. Another session, led by Shri Rakesh C.R., Patent Consultant based in Thrissur, shed light on the growing intersection of innovation, sports, and intellectual property, illustrating how patents influence technological advancements and competitive dynamics.
The workshop served as an important platform for knowledge exchange and capacity building, reinforcing the significance of intellectual property rights in advancing research, fostering entrepreneurship, and enhancing the economic potential of innovations emerging from the fisheries domain.
