In a significant step towards women’s empowerment in the fisheries sector, ICAR–Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR–CIFT), Kochi, successfully trained a group of women fishers in deep-sea fishing practices through a five-day onboard training programme conducted from 25–29 May 2026. The programme was jointly organized by the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) and ICAR–CIFT.
Four women members from fishermen cooperative societies in Puducherry participated in the training, which aimed to familiarize them with deep-sea fisheries resources, modern fishing technologies, and sustainable fishing practices. The participants received hands-on exposure aboard ICAR–CIFT’s research vessel Sagar Harita, learning the operation of advanced fishing gears such as longlines and large-mesh gillnets used for harvesting commercially important deep-sea species.

The women trainees who successfully completed the deep-sea fishing training programme at ICAR–CIFT were Mrs. Kuppamma Kalaiselvi, Mrs. Kalaimathi, Mrs. Preethi, and Mrs. Jayavani.
The initiative is particularly noteworthy as deep-sea fishing in India has traditionally been a male-dominated activity. By equipping women with technical knowledge and practical skills, the programme has opened new opportunities for their active participation in fishing operations beyond conventional post-harvest activities. The trainees expressed confidence that the knowledge gained would help them adopt scientifically managed, safe, and sustainable fishing practices in their communities.

With increasing pressure on coastal fishery resources, the sustainable utilization of deep-sea resources has become essential. In this context, empowering women to participate in deep-sea fisheries not only enhances livelihood opportunities but also promotes gender inclusivity in the sector. While ICAR–CIFT has previously supported women entrepreneurs through training in fish value addition and marketing, this is the first programme in India specifically designed to train women in deep-sea fishing operations.
The initiative represents a landmark achievement in advancing gender equality in fisheries and demonstrates the commitment of ICAR–CIFT and NCDC towards creating an inclusive, skilled, and sustainable fisheries sector. Similar training programmes are planned for fishers from other coastal states, further expanding opportunities for women in marine fisheries.
