CIFT-Turtle Excluder Device

Bg

TED is a globally recognized device for the safe release of turtles from trawl nets. ICAR-CIFT has standardized the TED as per international norms in collaboration with MPEDA and NOAA. Extensive field trials with the fine-tuned TED in CIFT research vessels and commercial trawlers along the east and west coast revealed that the catch loss from TED fitted trawl is negligible. Similarly, there is no considerable increase in drag or diesel consumption in TED fitted trawl nets. Further a portion of marine debris and bycatch species like jellyfish can also be excluded from the trawl net. The new TED is simple, easy to fit in the trawl belly, no maintenance required and long lasting.Implementation of TED and adoption of square mesh trawl cod as per the Marine Fisheries Regulation Act will help to protect marine turtles and large quantity of juveniles of fishes, which is inevitable for rebuilding the declining fish stock for a sustainable fishery in the future.
