As part of the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign 2026, the ICAR–Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT), Kochi, organised an awareness programme on “Cleanliness, Personal Hygiene and the Ill-effects of Single-Use Plastic” at St George LP School, Pazhangad, Kumbalangi, on 28 September 2026.

Around 65 school children participated in the programme. Games and interactive activities were conducted to create awareness among the students about waste segregation, cleanliness and personal hygiene.

The students were introduced to the segregation of waste into biodegradable, non-biodegradable and medical/chemical waste using green, blue and yellow bins. The programme also highlighted the harmful effects of single-use plastic and the importance of keeping the surroundings clean. The students later took a pledge in Malayalam to act responsibly towards the environment and avoid littering their surroundings.

The programme was coordinated by Dr Geethalakshmi V., Principal Scientist and Nodal Officer, Swachh Bharat, ICAR-CIFT. Dr Martin Xavier, Senior Scientist, and Dr Santhosh Alex, Coordinator, Swachh Bharat, ICAR-CIFT, served as resource persons. Mr Saran Raj, Technician, ICAR-CIFT, provided technical support for organising the programme.
