Fish Fin Waste to Functional Products: ICAR-CIFT Signs Technology Transfer Agreement

The ICAR–Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT) has entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Mr. K.M. Mohammed Imrosh for the transfer of technology to produce Partially Hydrolysed Fin Collagen Concentrate. The initiative aims to promote the commercial utilization of fish processing by-products through innovative and sustainable methods.

Fish fins, often discarded as waste in retail markets, are a valuable yet underutilised resource despite their high collagen content. Rich in aminoglycans with anti-inflammatory properties, fish fin collagen concentrate offers potential health benefits such as improved skin elasticity, joint and bone health, and overall functional nutrition. The developed technology enhances the bioavailability of fin collagen by converting it into concentrated and partially hydrolysed forms. The technology enables applications across functional foods, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and specialized pet food and feed products. By transforming fish fin waste into high-value partially hydrolysed collagen concentrates, the initiative supports sustainable waste management, promotes the circular economy, and enhances value addition in the fisheries sector. The scientific team from ICAR-CIFT includes Dr. Elavarasan K., Dr. Jeyakumari A., and Dr. Renuka V.
